Aging and Changes Inside the Eye
Retinal holes and tears often relate to changes in the vitreous, the gel inside the eye. As the eye ages, the vitreous can shrink or pull away from the retina. Sometimes that pulling creates a tear.
This is why adults may notice new floaters or flashes as they get older. Not every floater indicates a retinal problem, but sudden or worsening symptoms should be evaluated.
Severe Nearsightedness
People with severe nearsightedness may have a higher risk of retinal holes or tears. A longer eye shape can make the retina thinner or more vulnerable in some areas.
If you are highly nearsighted, regular dilated eye exams can help your eye doctor watch for changes. You should also know which symptoms need urgent evaluation, especially flashes, new floaters, blurred vision, or a curtain-like shadow.
Eye Injury or Previous Eye Surgery
Trauma to the eye can raise the risk of retinal damage. Prior eye surgery may also be a risk factor for some people. If you have had an eye injury or surgery in the past, make sure your eye doctor knows your history during your exam.
Family history can also matter. Retinal disease in close relatives may give your doctor helpful context when assessing your risk.
Symptoms That Should Not Wait
Retinal holes and tears do not always cause pain. Watch for:
- Sudden flashes of light
- New or increasing floaters
- Blurred or distorted vision
- A dark shadow in your side vision
Treatment may involve laser therapy, cryotherapy, or close monitoring, depending on the size, location, and seriousness of the retinal damage.
