What Do Flashes of Light Look Like?
Flashes caused by retinal issues are quick bursts, streaks, or flickers of light in peripheral vision. Some people compare them to seeing lightning streaks or camera flashes. These flashes may appear suddenly, especially in dim lighting or when moving the eyes.
In many cases, flashes occur because the vitreous, a gel-like substance that fills the eye, changes with age. As the vitreous shrinks or shifts, it can pull on the retina. This traction may trigger flashes of light and, in some cases, lead to a retinal tear or hole.
When Flashes Could Signal a Retina Problem
Flashes of light may be harmless in some situations, but they can also be a warning sign of a more serious retinal condition. You should schedule an eye exam right away if you have any of these symptoms:
- A sudden increase in flashes of light
- New or increasing floaters (specks or threads drifting in your vision)
- Flashes accompanied by blurred vision
- A shadow or a curtain appearing in your field of vision
These may indicate a retinal tear or even the early stages of retinal detachment. Without treatment, retinal detachment can develop into permanent vision loss.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
Retinal holes and tears are often treatable, especially when detected early. Eye specialists can diagnose these conditions during a comprehensive dilated eye exam. If a tear or hole is found, treatment such as laser therapy or cryotherapy can seal the retina and help prevent detachment.
