What to Expect During Cataract Surgery Recovery

Close-up shot of a woman's eye after cataract surgery recovery in Loveland Cataract surgery recovery usually involves a few days of blurry or foggy vision followed by gradual improvement as your eye heals. Many people notice clearer sight within the first several days, although your eye can continue adjusting for several weeks.

Cataract care at Kirk Eye Center is led by John D. Kirk, MD, FACS, a board-certified ophthalmologist who has practiced in Loveland since 1991 and has more than 25 years of experience caring for a wide range of eye conditions. Dr. Carver, OD, also part of the Loveland team, has experience with cataract management as well as pre- and postoperative eye care.

What Happens Right After Cataract Surgery?

You’ll need someone else to drive you home after surgery. Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day rather than returning immediately to your usual routine.

Your vision can initially seem blurry or foggy. Mild discomfort, itching, irritation, and light sensitivity may also occur while the eye heals. These issues generally improve during the first week or two.

How Quickly Does Vision Improve?

Many people notice an improvement within a few days, and some begin seeing more clearly within 24 to 48 hours. That doesn’t mean healing is finished. Your vision can continue changing, and complete recovery often takes several weeks.

Your experience can differ from someone else’s, so follow the instructions you receive after surgery rather than judging your recovery by another person’s timeline.

What Should You Avoid While Your Eye Heals?

Your eye needs some protection during the first few weeks. Instructions may include:

  • Use your prescribed eye drops as directed
  • Don’t rub your eye
  • Wear sunglasses when light bothers you
  • Stay away from wind, dust, and other irritants
  • Avoid strenuous activities that could injure the eye
  • Stay out of swimming pools and hot tubs
  • Skip eye makeup for the first week

Your eye doctor will also tell you when it’s safe to drive, exercise, and return fully to work or other daily activities.

When Should You Call Your Eye Doctor?

Severe pain, sudden vision loss, flashes of light, worsening redness, or new or suddenly increasing floaters aren’t part of a routine recovery and should be reported right away. You should also contact Kirk Eye Center if expected symptoms aren’t improving as healing progresses.
