Summer 2021 Eye Care Tips

A man with shopping bags wearing sunglasses. With summer finally here, most of us are going to be spending a lot more time outdoors. However, between allergies, sunlight, and swimming pools, there are a number of things that can damage your eyes while enjoying summer activities. Here are some 2021 summer eye care tips to keep your vision crystal clear.

Wear a Hat and Sunglasses

When you are outside for extended periods of time, make sure to wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection and a hat with a wide brim. Sunlight is one of the major causes of eye damage, even when it is reflected. This can result in pain, redness, and blurred vision, among other symptoms.

Wear Goggles if Swimming

Pools, especially those that are treated with chemicals, can have a detrimental effect on your eyesight. Chemicals such as chlorine may keep the pool clean, but they can damage the tear film on your eye, leading to red eyes and blurry vision. To keep your eyes healthy, try to wear goggles wherever you go swimming. Once you get out of the pool, wash around the eyes with fresh water.

Use Artificial Tears in Dry Environments

Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when the environment causes the surface of the eyes to dry out. This is most likely to happen in areas with low humidity, but it can happen almost anywhere on a hot, sunny day. If your eyes feel dry, you can use artificial tears to keep them moist and protected from the elements.

Stop Smoking If Applicable

Cigarette smoke is not only a major cause of dry eye syndrome, but can also increase your risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration. During the summer months, the effects of smoke on the eyes is also greater.
