How to Reduce the Risk of Diabetic Retinopathy

A portrait of a middle-aged man smiling. While it isn’t always possible to prevent diabetic retinopathy, there are a few ways you can reduce the risk of vision problems caused by diabetes. With early intervention and regular eye exams, you can avoid permanent vision loss and maintain your eye health. Here are some of the ways you can reduce the chance of developing diabetic retinopathy.

Manage Your Diabetes

The most effective way to reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy is to keep your diabetes under control. Vision problems are more common in those who don’t manage their diabetes, so make sure to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine. Try to get at least 20-30 minutes of moderate exercise per day and take your medication/insulin as directed by your doctor.

Monitor Your Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol

You should check your blood sugar several times per day to make sure that your body isn’t under any stress. In addition, you should only eat nutritious foods that keep your cholesterol low. Be sure to see your doctor if you notice any significant changes in your blood sugar or blood pressure.

Get Your A1C Test

A great way to keep track of your blood sugar level over a 2 or 3 month period is to have a glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C) test. This test will tell you your average blood sugar level, making it easier for your doctor to notice any irregularities.

Take Note of Any Changes in Vision
