Smiling caring middle aged wife embracing senior husband at home We celebrate both Fireworks Eye Safety Month and Cataract Awareness Month in June. Fireworks and cataracts can both cause blindness, although one is more accessible to prevent than the other.

Using fireworks can be done safely if you practice basic safety precautions. People over the age of 40 are more likely to develop cataracts, which are irreversible.

Cataracts are not preventable, but they can be treated. It is essential to recognize the signs of cataracts to determine whether they require treatment.

What’s Fireworks Eye Safety Month and Cataract Awareness Month?

June is Fireworks Eye Safety Month and Cataract Awareness Month, which means it’s a great time to learn more about protecting your vision. According to a Consumer Product Safety Commission report from 2021, fireworks caused 15,600 injuries last year. The majority of the injuries occurred among people under the age of 20. Approximately 15% of fireworks injuries involve the eyes, making them the third most injury-prone body part.

Why is Fireworks Safety Important?

You need to be aware that fireworks can cause serious damage to your eyes. Any firework that explodes or leaves a trail of sparks is too dangerous to look at. Even sparklers, which can seem harmless, can cause serious eye damage.

During Fireworks Eye Safety Month, we encourage everyone to celebrate safely by taking the following precautions:

  • Keep a safe distance from the fireworks.
  • Parents should never allow young children to play with fireworks.
  • Hold sparklers at arm’s length and look away from them as they burn.
  • Wear safety glasses when using fireworks to help protect your vision from particles that may fly into the air. Do not hold fireworks in your hand or light them indoors.
  • If you choose to use firearms for a July 4th celebration, ensure that the shooting is done safe away from crowds, pets, and buildings.

How Important Is It to Learn About Cataracts?

A cataract, a cloudy area in the eye’s lens, is the most common adult eye condition and a leading cause of blindness. Early signs of cataracts may include blurred vision, difficulty seeing well at night, or light sensitivity. Cataracts typically develop slowly and often don’t cause symptoms until they’ve advanced.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the United States and other countries. As cataracts worsen, colors may appear less bright and objects may seem more diffuse than before. Cataracts are more common in adults over age 60, so older adults need to be proactive about treatments.
