What Is Cataract Surgery?
The surgery involves removing and replacing your cloudy lens with a lens implant. Before the surgery, your doctor will measure your eyes’ shape and size so that they can select the right kind of artificial lens for you. These are typically intraocular lenses, or IOLs. They can be made of plastic, acrylic, or silicone.
When the procedure begins, your pupils will be dilated, and your eyes will be numbed. You may also be given a sedative to help you relax during the process. Once your eyes are ready, your eye doctor will remove your clouded lens and implant the artificial IOL.
To remove the old lens, your doctor may use ultrasound to gently break the lens or make an incision to remove the lens in one piece.
The new lens can then be inserted. While you may feel some initial discomfort after the surgery, those symptoms normally resolve after a few days. You can expect to see a full recovery within several weeks. While your eye doctor may recommend taking prescriptive eye drops or wearing an eye patch, it’s common to resume normal activities shortly after the surgery.
