When you undergo cataract surgery, your eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). As a result of this process, you exchange a cloudy lens causing deteriorating vision with a clear lens that can restore sharp vision.
Intraocular lenses have been used as part of cataract surgery since the 1980s. Initially, all IOLs were monofocal, providing clear vision at only one distance. As a result, you would be able to achieve clear distance vision after cataract surgery, but you would still need to wear glasses to see clearly at close range. While these IOLs provided a considerable improvement in vision compared to what you experienced with cataracts, they still failed to eliminate the hassles associated with wearing glasses.
Today, IOLs have become much more advanced. While you can still use a basic monofocal IOL, there are also a variety of high definition IOL options which provide significantly better vision. These premium IOLs are multifocal lenses which result in the ability to see clearly at a variety of distances, eliminating the need for glasses following surgery.
You’ll experience several important benefits when you use a premium IOL:
- Better range of vision
- Better vision in a variety of light conditions
- The ability to read easily without the need for glasses
At Kirk Eye Center, we offer the following premium IOL options to our patients:
- HD lenses – These multifocal IOLs distribute light effectively to all focal points (near, intermediate, and distance), providing excellent vision quality in a wide range of lighting conditions.
- Toric lens – Toric IOLs have a design that makes them ideally suited to correct astigmatism in addition to eliminating the vision issues associated with cataracts. They require the use of reading glasses.
During your cataract surgery consultation, Dr. Kirk will discuss the different IOL options with you and recommend the right one based on your lifestyle, eye health and budget.
