Cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision loss in the United States, impacting more than 25 million people. Fortunately, cataracts don’t have to result in blindness. You can safely and effectively restore clear vision with cataract surgery.

During cataract surgery, your eye’s clouded natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This will ensure light is focusing properly on your retina. At Kirk Eye Center, we have made cataract surgery a primary focus of our practice, and we offer a variety of premium IOL options that will help you achieve the best possible vision after surgery.

It’s important that you understand the entire cataract surgery process before deciding to move forward with your procedure. This includes knowing how to properly prepare for surgery.

One Week Prior to Cataract Surgery

man undergoing an eye exam in preparation for cataract surgery You’ll need to visit our office about a week or two before your procedure in order to undergo some important preoperative tests. This is an important part of the planning phase of your surgery, and it will help Dr. Kirk determine the best IOL option to address your unique needs.

During this visit, Dr. Kirk will also discuss what to expect on the day of your cataract surgery, and you will schedule all necessary post-operative follow-up visits. If you take any medications on a regular basis, make sure you discuss this with Dr. Kirk during your preoperative visit. In some instances, you may need to adjust your medication regimen prior to cataract surgery.

The Night before Cataract Surgery

Dr. Kirk may provide you with eye drops to use the night before your procedure. Make sure you administer all eye drops as directed by Dr. Kirk and his staff. In addition, you will need to take the following steps in preparation for your upcoming cataract surgery:

  • Refrain from alcohol consumption the night before surgery
  • Don’t eat or drink after midnight
  • Get plenty of sleep

The Day of Cataract Surgery

Make sure you adhere to the following instructions on the morning of your cataract surgery:

  • Don’t eat or drink anything the morning of surgery
  • Dress in loose, comfortable clothing
  • Don’t wear any makeup, perfume or other cosmetics
  • Arrive about a half hour before your procedure in case there is any last-minute paperwork to complete

Due to the lingering effects of the anesthesia, you won’t be able to drive following cataract surgery. Make sure you arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure. It is also a good idea to have someone stay with you for the first few hours of your recovery in case you need assistance. While recovery after cataract surgery is relatively short, it may take your eyes a few hours to adjust immediately following your procedure.
