What Are Punctal Plugs?
Punctal plugs are small, biocompatible plugs placed into the tear drainage openings located on the inner corners of your upper and lower eyelids. Normally, tears drain through these openings into the nose. When they are partially blocked, tears stay on your eyes longer, helping improve moisture and comfort.
There are two main types:
- Temporary (Dissolvable) Plugs: Often made of collagen or a similar material and typically dissolve over days to months. These are sometimes used to “test drive” the benefits.
- Semi-Permanent Plugs: Usually made of silicone or acrylic and designed to stay in place longer, though they can be removed if needed.
Who Do Punctal Plugs Help?
Punctal plugs are most often recommended for people with moderate to severe dry eye, especially when drops alone aren’t enough. They can be helpful if you:
- Use lubricating drops frequently, but still feel dry
- Have dry eye related to contact lens wear, aging, or hormonal changes
- Experience dry eye from certain medications
- Have dry eye associated with inflammation (often alongside other treatments)
What Do Punctal Plugs Feel Like?
Most people say the placement is quick and minimally uncomfortable. The procedure is done in-office and usually takes just a few minutes. You may feel slight pressure during insertion and mild irritation afterward, but that often settles within a day or two. Once in place, you typically don’t feel the plugs at all.
